about

The lyrics to "Ways to Hear Each Other" came verbatim from an online gathering of musicians, partly a memorial for Diane Moser, partly a search for ways to make music together when we're apart, as during the year of Covid-19. I hope the song works as a metaphor of human pain and connection.

lyrics

Ways to hear each other // I hear an echo/I don't think it's my fault/One after another/I've been overwhelmed // The speed of light/The speed of sound/Breathing together/Filling in the latency // Drawing circles/Drawing circles on the floor/Talk about lines/Talk about lines for hours // I love this/I love that/Not able to hear/I can hear it/I can hear it/It's super faint/I have very low signal/I hear it, but it's coming from you/I don't have it either/I don't think it's my fault/I hear an echo/I can hear it/I can hear it/I've been overwhelmed/It's still going to depend/I don't think it's my fault // Both, and something else/Independent loops/Less tolerance for error/Sloppy downbeats/Animation, fermatas, pads, pods/Filling in the latency/Less tolerance for error/Independent loops // This conversation about irregularities/We think so much/I can't say I particularly enjoy it/It's so painful/It will end/But it will end so slowly // The use of lullabies/Inside a book of birds/The absence of sound/The absence of sound is deafening // Yes, the laugh // I hear an echo/I don't think it's my fault/I've been overwhelmed/One after another // Are you not starting for an hour?/Shall I go away and come back in an hour?
